When a business launches it’s tempting to put it in the category of an overnight success with the essential ingredients consist of ambition, connections, financial backing and good luck. Such a combination is seemingly impossible, giving us permission to park our biggest dreams for that magical day when the stars align.
Speaking at a leadership conference, Port Macquarie’s Luminosity Youth Summit, I was amongst influencers keen to encourage and inspire young people. The message that “you can create your own path, after school” was reinforced time and time again. The leaders had a point. There are things that we have to learn at school. Yet, here was a room full of eager school aged sponges – thirsty for worldly knowledge. The buzz of intrinsic motivation for learning was contagious. The solution became obvious. Build a platform to feed these hungry and thirsty brains. One they will relate to and be intrinsically motivated to engage with, but that will also support and add meaning to the valuable lessons they learn at school: one that closes the gap between what has to be learnt and what is desired to be learnt. Ask them. They’ll tell you what they want.
So I pitched the idea to Jenna. We didn’t look back. In the words of Steve Jobs “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” I’m enjoying being back in Magnolia Cottage with my little sis.
